A lot has to be said about structuring a DJ set and creating a flow that keeps the dancefloor excited and interested. It’s essentially the core ingredient of what makes a good DJ. There’s no one correct way, no textbook or youtube video telling you how to do it. It’s something that you either have or don’t. Every DJ has their own idea of how a set should progress and one of the true masters of this art is BEN KORBEL
He kindly took some time out to give us a running commentary of how his ideal peak time set should flow..
I’ll set the scene and then let Ben take it from there. It’s 1am at The Spice Cellar with the room packed and buzzin’ with anticipation. Ben steps up to the decks and begins to cue his first tune. The crowd prepares for the 2 hour ride through KORBEL’s musical wonderland!
Mr Korbel, the floor is yours…
Kick things off with some deep slo-mo disco flavour -Suzanne Kraft – Morning Come
Next into some early, heady chunky beats- Tanner Ross – Miami Shores
Sliding into a mid 90s house classic- Francois K – Hypnodelic
Pepping things up as people itch for a little more ooomph. - Pional – Where Eagles Dare
Next up- testing out a new melodic number just purchased this week. People are either boozed or buckled enough now to not be scared ! - Jacob / Mikesh / Filburt – Philipp Dolphia
First peak moment of the set – returning some love to the floor with this recent classic- Lovebirds – Want You In My Soul
Juxtaposing the happy vibes with something a little more techy, but Still holding the groove -James Teej – Daytime Ringer
Acid haus – new remix of an old favourite. At this stage I likely need more beer.- Permanent Vacation – Zucker Hut (John Talabot Remix)
German disco techno euphoria with possibly a Kate Bush tucked away in it. Wolfram ft. Haddaway – Thing Called Love (Legowelt Special Remix Dub)
Siipping into some twisted Scandinavian beats from buddies of Todd Terje- Mungolian Jetset – Darker (Metro Mix)
Pianos and happiness – must be almost the end of the set. Joakim – Love Will Find A Way (Soul Clap floating mix)
Time for Todd. Big tune, good tune. Signing off. More beer? Todd Terje – Inspector Norse
And the you have it.. A look into the way Ben Korbel constructs his sets.
He’ll be headlining The Spice Cellar on Friday 27th July alongside Morgan, James Taylor and Steven Sullivan. For more info head to the EVENT listing.
